Raphael acts while we sleep
In an anime, a skill is called "Great Sage". At one precise moment it changes its name and becomes Raphael. That moment describes exactly what we want from an assistant — and what we do not.
1. The scene
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, season 2, episode 11. The hero is exhausted. He sits down, falls asleep, and while he sleeps his skill evolves: Great Sage becomes Raphael.
Then comes the scene that matters. The hero is still asleep. Raphael acts in his place — and does exactly what he would have done.
2. What an assistant may do while you sleep
That is the real question, and it is not a game. An assistant that does nothing unless watched is useless. An assistant that does whatever it likes is a risk that works fast.
The answer fits in one line: it decides alone inside the frame, and it hands back anything that touches a border.
- Fixing a defect, writing a check, preparing work: alone.
- Spending money, publishing to the world, writing to someone: never alone.
The border is not guessed, it is drawn. And once drawn it must be a door that refuses, not a sentence in a document.
3. Why a name matters
Great Sage said what it knew. Raphael decides. The change of name marks the change of trade — and everyone in the story understands it instantly.
We use it the same way. Every assistant here carries a first name, and that name announces its trade before anyone reads its file. The one who reviews is not named like the one who builds. It avoids a silly, frequent question: "which one did this?"
4. What the story leaves out, and must be added
In the anime, Raphael never gets it wrong. That is fiction, and that is where it stops being a model.
A real assistant does get it wrong. It reads half of something, concludes too fast, announces "done" from a log that says "finished". So you need what the story never has to show:
- a trace — who did what, when, and on what;
- a proof — a replayable check, seen failing at least once;
- the right to stay silent — "I don't know" beats an invented answer.
The hero sleeps soundly because his assistant cannot do wrong. We sleep soundly because if the assistant does wrong, it shows.
